Princess Flo of Bedlam

People come to the Bedlam Farm Open House in Cambridge, New York in June and October for different reasons.  Maybe it’s to meet best selling author Jon Katz, or to meet his sweet wife, fiber artist Maria Wulf.  Maybe it’s to see the farm animals: the sheep, chickens, donkeys, Chloe the pony, or the two legendary Border Collies.  In the end almost everyone who enters the Farm is greeted by royalty in the form of a feline named Flo.

This October, after making her rounds to the many guests she went off to take a break from her duties. She clearly didn’t want media attention at this point, turning away from my attempts to take her picture.

Later she continued working the crowd, napping on warm laps, or letting herself be touched by her obviously adoring fans.  There was something familiar about her comportment.  She reminds me of Queen Elizabeth II visiting her minions in England, demure, gentle and at peace among her human subjects. It struck me that this dear, lovable cat might teach the politicians in Washington, D.C. a thing or two about diplomacy.
